I am in need of a small camper or something to reside in at a small farm in SE LA. I am not in the habit of asking complete strangers for this kind of thing but I will now. My roof came off my barn apt. I have no power yet and do not know the full extent of the damage to my personal possessions altho friends have said it is a total loss. I believe my animals are safe and alive except I have lost my beloved dog. Their barn is still standing and appears to be without damage. I do not know how much I can pay or for how long I will need it. Even a horse trailer that can be run by generator to sleep in. I have references. Just putting this out there.

One of the main sites for connecting families and friends is the Red Cross Family Links Web site. So far, more than 105,000 people nationwide have registered on the site and through a free hotline, 1-877-LOVED-1S (1-877-568-3317). The Web site, which is updated continuously, allows users to search for missing people or post their own information and whereabouts. The Times-Picayune newspaper in New Orleans also has set up an online help center at its Web site, www.nola.com , where evacuees can search for missing people or post messages that they are safe.

If you have a facility or pasture which you can offer to house refugee horses and ponies, victims of Hurricane Katrina, please email your name, address, phone number and email address to kcadams@usef.org , or at 859-225-6993, (please email if at all possible as we expect a heavy load of calls.) If you can volunteer veterinary services please submit your contact information. The USEF is posting a listing by state of these safe havens for horses and ponies on our website. The list will be accessed by going to www.usef.org, on the right side of the homepage click on Hurricane Katrina Equine Relief. It is expected to serve as a master list to help horse owners in Katrina's path find help. Other equine organizations wishing to assist the effort and link to the list should also email kcadams@usef.org. We urge the participation of anyone who has the space, veterinary expertise and tenderness of heart to help these equine refugees.

The AAEP Foundation (American Association of Equine Practioners) has established the Equine Disaster Relief Fund to support disaster response efforts and the development of disaster preparedness resources for horses, veterinarians and horse owners. Donations to the Equine Disaster Relief Fund will support response efforts in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina as well as additional emergency needs. A donation form is available online at http://www.aaep.org/f_disaster_relief.php. For more information about this effort, contact Amelia Geran, AAEP Foundation Coordinator, at 800-443-0177 or ageran@aaep.org.
